Competition "Stuttgarter Pavillon III"

The goal was to design a temporary pavilion for exhibitions and lectures. The pavilion's intention was to serve as a meeting place for students and teachers/professors and as a "Centre of Communication" between the two buildings for architecture and science. This centre was supposed to establish a connection between the various faculties, providing an environement for communication and exchange. Because of its important location, the pavilion had to have a symbolic character for the University of Stuttgart.
The team which announced the competition imagined the pavillon to be designed as a light construction made of transparent and translucent materials. The area for the pavillon, split up in one or more levels, was supposed to occupy a limited area of 80-100 square metres.
Another requirement was the possibility to house modern technologies (communication, picture-media, computer-technology, audio...).
Submissions to this competition were expected to provide detailed information regarding the constructional components of the hull, corresponding quality of materials and a concept of the interior including specific guidelines for lighting (daylight / artificial light).

Design Idea

The first intention for the design of the object was a associativity to a manta ray. This fish combined ease and elegance with a significant , dynamic sculptural form. But a form with an associativity like this was too bad to use. So I decided to keep the optical properties from a manta ray in combination with another form. The pavillon should transmit informations with a flexible construction, like a spaceprobe. As a result from this approach the object is constructed as an flexible, mobile system. The design reached the second of three rounds.
